It comes as the rogue state’s leader Kim Jong-un has stepped up its nuclear programme in the face of international condemnation, with more recent missile tests.

But speaking to reporters as she headed out to Jordan for a three-day Middle East visit, Mrs May said UN Security Council resolutions are still the way to go.

It flies in the face of comments by the US President, who warned he will “solve” the nuclear threat posed by North Korea if China doesn’t.

It follows an ominous warning from President Trump that the US is ready to “solve North Korea” itself if neighbouring China fails to take a harder line.

Speaking in the Middle East Mrs May declined to say if Britain would stand ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with the US if it take unilateral action against Kim Jong-un.

Instead she said the issue remains one for the Chinese to deal with – and that the best course of actions is to continue to work through the United Nations.

“I think what is crucial… where we have been working and will continue to work through the United Nations security council, through resolutions we have supported there and with the United States, is to encourage China to look at this issue of North Korea and to play a more significant role,” she said.

“I think that’s where our attention should focus.”

Mrs May said: “I think what is crucial and where we have been working, and will continue to work through the United Nations Security Council, through resolutions which we have supported there, and with the United States, is to encourage China to look at this issue of North Korea and to play a more significant role in terms of North Korea.
